There were three bills of interest to the utility world this session, and all three focus on the water and sewer sectors. The bills are SB 257, SB 347 and SB 383, all authored by Sen. Ed Charbonneau.

Hoosier lawmakers weren't shy about spending money in this year's legislative session, allocating hundreds of millions of dollars to Indiana roadways and approving an additional $42 million for the Regional Cities Program. This new state spending, a rarity in a non-budget year, was accomplished without raising taxes on Indiana residents. Instead, fiscal leaders utilized state budget reserves and proceeds from last year's tax amnesty program to cover the new expenses.

The 2016 Indiana General Assembly session saw activity in all vice related industries: alcohol, tobacco and gambling (oops! - not really gambling), as well as firearms.

Civil Rights Legislation Fails to Advance

Indiana Competes, a coalition of more than 400 businesses and associations formed to support updating Indiana's civil rights statutes, was a new endeavor this year. Many Taft clients were members of the group.

A few specific bills were filed in the Senate this year to address Indiana's civil rights statutes.
